Well, I was watching the opening to the anime yesterday, and I think I've figured something out! during the song, the images of the characters that roll... They all have to do with that certain part of the song, I think!
So, it starts:
I was so happy when you smiled at me...
We see Yuki, standing by a window. It's most certainly referring to Tohru, and how she asked him to stay friends with him...
With a smile that melts everything away...
We see Kyo sitting on the roof. He's also probably talking about Tohru.
Spring is still far away, and the cold earth is still wet...
Here we don't really see anything, just the title "Fruits Basket"
Was waiting for the day when the first grass sprouts...
Here we see Shigure sitting and Kagura on the porch, looking outside... It's probably as if it is them speaking, wishing that someone would finally come and save the Juunishi... Shigure's was probably a little voice inside him that tells him that, and Kagura's version is probably more Kyo-centered.
For instance, even though today is painful...
We first see chibi Yuki standing next to a door. He is probably referring to his days with Akito, where he was physically and mentally abused.
We then see Haru sitting in the grass with a boy that I believe is Momiji (could someone confirm this?). If it is indeed Momiji, he is certainly talking about his whole mother thing. And Haru is probably talking about how it's painful to be called dumb simply because he's the ox.
Even if yesterday's wounds are left behind...
Then we see chibi Kyo. He's talking about how his mom killed himself and that now he's with Kazuma. Even though it seems like he's moved on, yesterday's wounds are still left behind...
Afterwards, we see Kisa and Hiro. Hiro, I'm not certain about this one, but I believe he's talking about how it was a wound for him to tell Akito about his love for Kisa, and how it hurts him to leave Kisa by herself... Kisa, no doubt, is referring to the situation when she could not speak but decided to try again at school.
If I open up the heart that I want to believe in...
There is a flash of chibi Tohru playing Fruit Basket with her friends... I'm not quite sure why this was inserted... Anyone got any ideas? It may have something to do with her love for Kyo...
After, we see Hatori. This is about the most obvious one. He is also wishing, like Shigure, that even though he says he will be trapped in this never ending snow, that he hopes that someday, he'll be able to open up his heart if he believes for someone.
I can't become someone else...
This is one of the ones that is kind of painful to see. We see Akito, looking deafeated, leaning over the windowsil. It could be interpreted in many ways. She may be saying this to her mother, telling her that this is the way she is, and that she is trying her best to be male, but it's difficult... Or maybe it's her secret wish towards the Juunishi, "I can't become someone else, and I don't know what to do to keep you near me...". She also may just be speaking about herself in general, how she feels she's never good enough for anyone...
But I can change...
We see Tohru... Maybe she feels she isn't good enough for the Juunishi, and that they deserved something better? I'm not one hundred percent sure about this one either... Maybe she's not even talking about herself, maybe she's talking about someone in the Juunishi...
Let's stay together always...
We see Tohru, then a picture of her mom. She is no doubt referring to the promise they had made to stay together forever.
All in all, it's a touching opening.
