Character you are applying for: Kisa Sohma
How far are you in the manga and anime?:
I have watched all of season one of the anime, repeatedly and avidly. I am currently in possession of volumes 1-20, and although I cannot get my hands on the next couple of volumes, my appetite for Fruits Basket has turned to spoilers, on the net and wherever accessible.
How often will you be available to role-play?:
Around three to four times a week…really, it depends on the occasion, vacation, time, location, place, school work, what I’ve got on my hands and all those finicky things. But I’ll try my best to post on a regular basis!
How should this character be portrayed? What is he/she like?:
Background Info & My Opinion (optional)
Sohma Kisa was initially introduced after being bullied. It seemed that she had bottled up her hurt, her fear, everything inside her, including her words. Luckily for her, she ran into Honda Tohru who helped her overcome this particular fear.
For a long time, we see Kisa beginning to grow, mature, and come to terms with life in her own way. She still respects Tohru, a lot, but is beginning to truly shine in her own unique manner.
I really love Kisa’s relationships, with Hatsuharu, Tohru and Hiro. It adds more to the blend and you begin to see more of how they feel towards one another, behind the scenes, especially with Hiro, and her relationship with Tohru. (Read on.)
For some of you, Kisa may seem the “sweet adorable little cute girl” on screen or page, but there’s more than meets the eye. Kisa was suffering . She wanted to be…”accepted” by her classmates, but when they didn’t, she had to hide it; pretend she didn’t have a care in the world what they thought.
In each of Natsuki Takaya’s character, a complex personality evolves. One of the most developed background and personality’s, was Kisa Sohma’s…the tiger’s. Kind and caring, and in almost every way reminiscent of Tohru Honda, she bears the scars of the past, but can still manage to move on, with the help of her loving family and friends.
What’s Kisa like?
Kisa has a sweet temperament and she’s rather helpful by nature. In some ways, she’s depicted as the epitome of all that is innocent and pure . Although she was once bullied, a chance meeting with Tohru gave her the strength to try again…which is very brave.
Kisa holds a distinctive relationship with Hiro Sohma-the ram. In some ways, the duo can remind one of Kyou and Tohru . Kind and caring as she is to him, she does seem to hold a slight resemblance towards her mentor, Tohru Honda.
As I’ve stated before, Kisa is one of Fruits Basket’s most charming and engaging characters, with a happy and loving nature that can’t fail to make you gush too.
How do I plan to portray her?
Like the fact has been emphasized over and over before, Kisa is strikingly like Tohru. Whether she is only mimicking Tohru to feel “safe” or its what she chooses to do, this means her manner and personality is very like Tohru Honda’s.
This means she’s a compassionate girl, meek at times, but the type who puts others before her. She does her best to help the ones she cares about…and the ones she doesn’t necessarily like, being a helpful sort of person.
Kisa is also very brave . She came to terms with her fear, and recognized it, and still, even when she knew she “wasn’t any stronger”, still went back to school, to “try again”. In this respect, she has shown great determination and courage.
I plan to depict her exactly as the manga personifies her-kind, caring, compassionate and above all, sweet and innocent.
Relationships & My Opinion (optional.)
Kisa and Tohru, both very alike in their manner to one another, are somewhat like older sister and younger sister. Kisa looks towards Tohru for advice, and, put simply, adores her. This manner makes Hiro Sohma (see below.) rather jealous, and so he takes out his temper on Tohru, dubbing her “stupid woman”.
At some points, Kisa does the protecting, and in exchange, Tohru guides her towards a brighter future. The two both come out of this deal with the upper hand, and both gain a lot of knowledge from each other.
Tohru and Kisa both are rather compassionate towards other people and each other. In some ways, I think that these two could work well as a family, seeing as both only strive to help one another, in their own altruistic manner.
Hiro and Kisa’s relationship is a hard one to explain. Hiro has felt the need to protect her, but when he explained his feelings to Akito, Akito chose to hit Kisa away from Hiro, giving Hiro the impression he couldn’t protect the ones he cared about and Kisa would be better off without him.
Later on, when Kisa had to endure the bullying, right after that particular incident, Hiro found himself forcing himself not to help her, even though he knew how much it would affect her. When Kisa made her stable rise to recovery, he found himself harvesting feelings of jealousy towards her idol, Tohru Honda, seeing as it was Tohru who helped Kisa recover, and Kisa was sticking to Tohru’s side by superglue.
Kisa and Hiro’s relationship could be described as a “childhood sweethearts” .It is obvious Hiro cares deeply for Kisa, and although Kisa may act only friendly towards him, the fact she was pleased he was worried about her gives most of her act away. However, in the innocence of her youth, it’s hard to tell what she truly feels for him.
I really hope these two pull their act together, seeing as they’re very cute as a pairing!
One thing you like about this character:
Wow…uh…where to start? (all of the above?)
Like I said, I really love Kisa’s self belief . The fact that even though she knew she wasn’t any stronger, she wanted to keep on trying, and in this, she matured and grew in her own way, although many of us may not have noticed.
The fact that she wanted to, and she did return to school, even though she’d been bullied there, can give all of us courage, even if we’re only “human”. Her progress is like a stepping stone of guidance for us . I know for one, I’d feel ashamed if I couldn’t do what a character in a book had.
It seems as if she did it, to help others overcome their fear. That’s her magic.
I really… really want to have that sort of strength…and someday, I hope I will.
At least ten lines of sample RP:
Tiny hands clenched into fists, streaked with perspiration.
The linoleum floor beneath her feet seemed to buck, a sea of nausea, trying to toss Kisa off. He was coming, she could hear his footsteps echoing through the empty hallway, the material of his kimono brushing against the slightly gritty ground.
Turning to face herself in the glossy mirror, Kisa saw how frightened she was, huge eyes taking up most of her face, and her whole body shaking. Tears welled in her eyes-she roughly wiped them away, setting her jaw stubbornly, and turning to face the incoming person.
I promised myself…Onee-chan, Hiro-chan…and myself that I wouldn’t run away anymore.
The silence was infinite, the dull ache of silence beginning to set in. Akito was just around the corner, she could envision him standing there, waiting, a cruel smirk playing about his lips.
No! No, I have to do this! Onee-chan said this would be good for me…she said…she said…its time to face my fears-!!
He had rounded the corner now, dark eyes flashing, scanning the path ahead of him. Kisa stood bravely in his way, trying not to let her fear show, resisting the temptation to turn and flee like a wounded dog.
Her hand brought itself into the air, accompanied with a weak “H-Hello…Akito-san…” Akito paused abruptly, and then a small smile played about his features, laughing slightly as he moved on. Kisa reeled in his wake, childish pleasure flushing her features. She silently addressed the air, every syllable glowing in the wake of her triumph.
Hiro-chan, Onee-chan, I did it! I said hello to Akito!
Its something you can be proud of.
